Betwixt is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The characters are rich and the story is captivating; I couldn’t get enough. It is not often that one comes across an author that writes an unforgettable, enchanting book, luckily Tara Bray Smith is one of those authors. Readers will devour Betwixt!! I am now a devoted fan and cannot wait for another book!

Betwixt is one of those intriguing novels that will have you flipping pages for hours. Three teenagers, Ondine, Morgan, and Nix, have always known they were different from others. When they get together at a summer solstice party, they’re about to discover exactly how different they are from the rest of the humans.

This was an awesome novel from cover to cover! With such an amazing plot, I would definitely recommend Betwixt!

Betwixt by Tara Bray Smith is an amazing book that is set in a realistic modern day world in which mysterious things keep occurring. In the beginning of the book, the main characters are introduced, and they appear to have nothing in common, besides living in the same town in Oregon. As the story continues, it is revealed that they are all woven together in an intricate web and need to depend on each other to survive. When I first started reading, I was a little confused by all the complex characters and what was happening to them, but as I kept reading, I was drawn into the storyline, and I could not put it down. Definitely recommended to any fantasy/science fiction lovers.

Did you ever believe that you had a superpower? There are usually times in a person’s life that they are convinced that they are a super-person, that they are different. The only real distinction between the rest of us and Morgan, Nix, and Ondine is that they are actually different, in fact they are an entirely different species. Morgan, Nix, and Ondine, are part of a race called Fay. Fay, or fairies, can be dark creatures, prone to dark deeds. In a secret rave deep in the woods each of these teenage children discover their true origins and each reacts with relief, ecstasy, and terror, respectively. The dark overtone of this novel does not detract from its ability to draw a reader into its web and keep her there. Although Betwixt is somewhat confusing, the charm of the novel keeps you intrigued until you reach the curious but satisfying last page.

Betwixt was an awesome book! I thought it was very strange and “out there” at times, but that’s what I loved about it. It was unlike anything I had ever read before. Also, it was very visual. I liked that the author painted pictures with words and I felt like I was there. If there is a sequel in the making, I am definitely going to read it!

Much to my surprise and delight a few pages into Betwixt I realized that the Portland they were located in was the very one I’ve grown up visiting almost every month! So that automatically perked up my interest. Not only was it in my home state, but I knew exactly where the places in the book were. They even mentioned driving through my hometown where I live now! So I was even more eager to read this book after finding that out.

It was an easy read, something that sucked me in and kept a hold on me until I finished it, but also a very good read. The characters were very well developed and believable. It was even creepy enough in parts to give me the chills. I am always looking for books that can do that, I read plenty of horror and I hardly ever get that effect. Maybe it was due in part to being placed in my own backyard, but I think it was mostly how mystical and yet realistic the writing was.

I hope that there will be a sequel to Betwixt. And a sequel to that one too! I would recommend it to anyone, male or female, teen or older. Definitely not meant for some younger readers, but perfect for my age of 18. I think that Betwixt will make a lot of fans, I myself, am already hooked.

Betwixt is not the sort of book that I’m usually attracted to; I don’t usually like anything that falls into the ‘science fiction’ category. But this book was different. The characters were real people, and acted how real people would have in situations that most people would never find themselves in. The book pulled me in with twists that I definitely did not see coming. I was kept constantly curious about what was going to happen next. It was a good read, and the plot did not get overblown into some unbelievable adventure, which I really liked. Although I was hesitant at first to read it, I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it.

Betwixt by Tara Bray Smith certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you can get past the language and mild sexuality, then you will find a story unlike any you’ve ever read before. Dark, sensual, and all around beautiful, Betwixt gives a whole new meaning to the word “faerie”. Despite the plot being occasionally hard to follow, any fantasy lover will appreciate this unique book.

  1. Betwixt was absolutely one of the top five best books I’ve ever read. From the detailed setting to the almost-real characters, there wasn’t one part I disliked. Usually “fairies” are viewd as kiddish and too sweet, but this book just revealed to me how utterly inticing and dark fairies can be. I find it incredible that Tara Bray Smith can create this whole alternate, scientifical universe out of her head. Kudos to Tara! I was hooked by the first paragraph and was devastated at the end to find out there wasn’t a sequel out yet! I’m counting down the days…

  2. I love how Tara (can i call her Tara?) used real life and fantasy together i thought the characters fit perfectly where they were put and her transitions from one character to the next was beautifuly arranged. I my self am trying to write a book at the moment and it wasnt going to smoothly but now that i read this book its put a new perspective on my writing and im very happy about it so thank you Tara!

  3. Betwixt was such an amazing book!! I read it so quickly, and I was so disappointed when the story ended. I can’t wait for a sequel. The story is unique and fresh; I haven’t read a novel this original in a long time. It was a little confusing at times, but other than that, it was awesome! I’m so glad I bought it. I was seriously so excited about this book that I was raving about it on BookDivas, and I even posted something on my book blog.

  4. I love this book!!!!!!! I am a total bookworm, but I am also very picky about the books that I read. The authors have to get me hooked on the book in like the first chapter or else I will throw the book back onto the shelves. I was hooked on betwixt as soon as I read the back of the book which was very impressive. I loved the book so much that I referred it to every single one of my friends. I believe that tara is a brilliant writer and I can’t wait for the sequel!!!

  5. what the hell is wrong with this book??!! what kind of drug was the author on to be inspired to write such a revolting pile of dung? I definitely hope there will NEVER be a movie of this (or a sequel). This is an example of one of the reasons that so many teenagers dress like freaking vampires! And WTF is dust?! It’s not even a real drug?!?! To put an end to MY lovely review as i know shelbi sounds like such an innnocent name, i can’t belive i wasted like 20 bucks on this weird book.

  6. I thought betwixt was one of the best books ive ever read. tara finds a great way to mix majic and fantasy with every day people. keeps you wondering what secrets you’ll find out about next. I cant wait for the next book!

  7. Well to tell everyone the truth, i was intrigued by BETWIXT as soon as i saw the cover. i figured (even though you shouldnt judge a book by its cover) that this book is going to be fantasitic, abstact even. So i immediately picked it up, and started reading.

I was drawn to the book by the time i finished the third page, and when i finished it all i could do was think about it.

I think (first of all) that Tara Bray Smith has written an AMAZING story!! i absolutely LOVED the characters she created, (ondine and nix were my favorite) and the plot. Also (this is totally random) there were several sentances in the book which i stopped at and went “wow, this really gives you a feel for what’s going on” for example there was a sentance that was something like “Morgan looked in the mirror again, as if to see if she was there” There were several sentaces like that, that completely GRIPPED me 🙂

Thanks Tara Bray Smith for writing such a different, and inspirational book!!! I really truly have never read anything like it before 🙂 10/10

  8. This book was AMAZING! I loved how the characters were all connected in the begining. I can’t wait for the sequal. I was a little confused in the end though. I didn’t get why Ondine was coming back. Or, how Nix was all of a sudden on a boat and how he got there in the first place. Other than that. This book is a must read. Seriously!

  9. i have never read this book. but i planing to buy it now thanx to my Bff 🙂

  10. tara you did an amazin job writing this. i love how everything comes together like a big puzzle it was awsome. i felt like i was there when i was reading it. you make the characters come to life right before the readers eyes. please make a second to this book!

  11. BETWIXT was a great book. it kept me up till 3 just flipping through the pages. although i couldn’t stand neve!

  12. This was a very interesting story with a different view of ‘fay’. Unfortunately, there were a few things missing that made it confusing to me. Of course, I was probably just missing something. Anyway… Hope there’s a sequel soon- I want the rest of that story!

  13. Betwixt was a great read, the plot, characters, setting everything was magnifico~!

Like many have stated, it gave me a wayy different view on how we all portray what “fay” is supposed to be! There were a few parts were i had been going
“ok, what are they talking about? Corpus, changeling, cutters???” I was soo confused but it was all explained later, which was crucial for me to keep reading. =D Anyways i loved the story and cant wait for the next one to come!

  14. Betwixt may be the best book I’ve read in a long time. Dark, beautiful, and sensitive, this novel is a captivating masterpiece. Tara did the greatest job in capturing, as said before, how normal people would deal with abnormal situations. You can only but feel in sync with Nix, Morgan, and Ondine.

I’m waiting for the next! What do I do until then?

  15. This book was absolutely mesmerizing. It was so captivating I read it in two sittings. It’s one the best books I’ve read in a long time. Though weird and confusing as it may seem, I felt like I could somehow relate to it. I don’t know how and I don’t know why. (Not because I’m on dust or something XD) The only part that I didn’t quite enjoy as much as the rest of the book was the ending. I mean the very last page there. That last paragraph where it said how Nix was sailing etc. I felt it somehow lacked closure. When I finished the book it didn’t give me a feeling of it being complete, I felt I was still searching for something more, something deeper. But at the same time, I liked it. It gave me a chance to use my imagination as explore and dream about what happens next. I really do hope there is a sequel to the book, I absolutely loved it. Congrats Tara, you did great!

  16. I love BETWIXT so much. I was hooked after reading the back… i made the bookstore i went to stay open late because i wanted the book so bad. I felt like i could relate to the characters. and i started to like alot of them. I wished they were real so that i could be friends with them. I loved Nix… i felt so bad for him. I want there so bad to be a sequal… the book kept me constantly curious and now i am going crazy about not knowing what happened next. I read it so fast. And i drempt about it almost every night. Also my parents could not get me to put it down. I was even able to give a very detaled discription to my mom and siter. It was so good. I love it so much. And i am very picky about the books i read. And Tara did really well!! Again i hope there is a sequal!!

  17. Having worked in the children’s department of a bookstore for the past two years, I’m always keeping a careful eye on what new books seem to be selling well. Amongst all the Gossip Girl’s and Twilight Saga books this book is one I immediately thought wouldn’t do well, despite my own intrigue with it. However, I noticed that it was steadily selling and seemed to be gaining a fanbase, albeit one very different from the Gossip Girl and Twilight Saga fanbases.

So, like with any popular new book, I picked it up and began to read it. Immediately I recognized the writing style to be at a much higher quality than that of Stephenie Meyer or Cecily von Zieger, and I was soon enthralled with the story, wondering what was happening. The plot is rich with suspense, romance, and magic; all of which is woven so subtly it was easy to believe this world actually existed.

I usually go through 3 books a week, but BETWIXT took me two weeks to finish, and by the end I was left with a full, satisfied feeling that I so rarely get after reading a wonderful story. I don’t recommend this for the Twilight or Gossip Girl fan, it’s a book meant to be chewed slowly, savored, rather than breezed through and obsessed over. For those readers that enjoy real characters struggling to find a place in a world growing rapidly confusing, a dash of romance and heat, and a touch of magic, suspense, and even a tad bit horror…this is the perfect book and I highly recommend it!

  18. chapter 6 is went the fun starts. i love betwixt.

  19. point No. 1: Betwixt was really good up until the climax. That is when it sort of started to suck. I mean, the climax is usually when the ‘problem’ is resolved- or fighting to be resolved. I had to read it over again to figure out that the “problem” (AKA when Bleek had them all tied up and Nix is trying to transfer the fire) was the climax. And the resolution… i didn’t even get how it was resolved.
point No. 2:Unanswered questions are great…. when they are used in the right way….
point No. 3 Ondine’s skin color was ill defined. and that seems to play a big roll in the end. I was kinda surprized.

other than that, the book was great!!!!!!!!

  20. I went to Barnes and Noble the other day and out of all the books I could have chosen, I chose this. I was pulled in by the cover and the back. As a book worm who loves science fiction/romance, I chose this. I am a few chapters in, and I can’t seem to get into it as I have with other books. I hope to love and feel what everyone else does for it, but it is very descriptive, and so I’m still in that part. I hope it becomes more interesting soon. My input isn’t to be taken in a bad way, I just want to help people who are on the border line of buying this book and want a different opinion than, I just adore the book! Haha sorry, it’s just my intake on Betwixt so far. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, HOPE THIS HELPS!

  21. I think Betwixt is one of the most amazing books out there. It was easy to get into to & hard to get out of, not wanting it to end. I think Tara Bray Smith should make it a series. That would make me so happy. With all her great ideas I’m sure she could expand the story. I know if she did make it a series I would defiantly buy the next books

  22. Betwixt is one of the oddest, best books i have read for a long time. At first I couldn’t get my head around the fay and the scia, but as I read on, and trust me, I read on fast, it continued to make sense and by the end I was (and still am) wishing that I had a second book to dig into. Its already something that I have recommended to all my friends. Betwixt is def. a book Im going to read again and again. Tara Bray Smith has such a good sense of what to write, and there was not a single time that I had to re-read to understand (only to be able to read it again) I def. hope that she continues to make more of these kinds of novels if not more of this novel.

  23. Betwixt is a book that is unique that involves a creative mind to write all of this. It mixes with fantasy and drama and horror and science. I loved love Twilight and if you do too, you’ll just adore Betwixt! I enjoyed reading it, though some parts were confusing, i eventually understand it more and more. The ending indicates that there will be a sequel and i can’t wait.

  24. ok. sorry but i have another comment…

point no. 4: does no one care what the heck boat in what the heck sea Nix is in/on????? I mean he tried to save their lives, he lived with Ondine and uh….. he narrated part of the book!!! I think that he was important. In the end two happy families were described in third person- and then something about a boat….. and no one cares about Nix! If there was a second book, i might be ok with it…

  25. I love your book!! I was in the bookstore looking for a new book to read(because I have read all the books known to man) when I stumbled upon Betwixt, mostly because the cover caught my eye, and wow that is one of the best books I have ever read! I can’t wait for the next one. I love to write, but to me its frustrating how long it takes to research, plan and then put your ideas together into a story. So I was wondering how long did it take you to actually finish writing this book, and how close you are to finishing your next one? Thanks!! You are an inspiration.

  26. i just got this book a few days ago i just started its great

  27. Twilight is nuthing compared to the Betwixt novel! Its a wonderful book full of an unexplained world around humans yet the emotion and love people show. Its a fantastic read!Twilight fans beware of the new craze!

  28. i just finished betwixt and loved it im already anxious for a sequal. i thought it was way better then the twilight saga. i just wished that ondine would accept who she was sooner. im not sure how interesting it would be without moth and bleek. i was kinda shocked raphael was their guide. there has to be a sequal it was left so open cant wait!

  29. Betwixt. It is now one of my most favorite books. It is a complicated story with so many unexpected twists and turns. and though the story is set in present day, the whole thing almost seems surreal. Some people complained that it was to detailed, however i am only 13 years old and had no problem reading or understanding it. This book has a certain feeling about it that only few books have. Overall, it was an amazing book. the end.

  30. I’ve read this book countless times–and every time I do, I imagine myself as Ondine…in many ways, I’m just like her!
This book is mind blowing and definitely like nothing I’ve ever read before. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. I recommend Betwixt to anyone who enjoys reading amazing books.
